Behavior in ASD

Since students abilities and deficits are varied and fairly unpredictable there tends to be as great a range of behaviors in the ASD population.  Students act out for a variety of reasons stemming from their disorder.  Some examples of reasons they act out are: inability to communicate their wants and needs, inability to understand communication, frustration in curriculum (i.e…too hard or too easy), and sensory issues.  Although children with Autism can demonstrate an infinite number of behaviors there are several categories of behaviors that are recognized as fairly common.  Some of these include: aggression, self injurous acts, escapism, and sexually inappropriateness.  Many methods have come about to help parents and educators deal with negative behaviors.  The TEACHH method founded in North Carolina is one systematic approach to behavior as well as Applied Behavior Analysis or ABA.

Resources:

The Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies offers this website that gives resources not only on Applied Behavior Analysis but on Autism in general.  The site also contains several articles on behavior in Autism and Autism.  This site would be great for teachers or parents or anyone who is just generally interested in knowing more about Autism.

This site is all things TEACHH (treatment and education of Autistic and related communication-handicapped children).  The TEACHH official website includes background information on the process, opportunities to become trained in TEACHH, links to other useful sites, and helpful publications on this method. Although this site contains a wealth of information on TEACHH I feel this site would be best for someone who is seriously considering being TEACHH educated through training or publications.  I would only recommend this site for persons interested in the TEACHH method only.  This really is not a site to find out about other behavior methods or Autism in general.

  • Solving Behavior Problems in Autism (Visual Strategies Series) by Linda A. Hodgen QuirkRoberts publishing, 1999.

This book discusses the use of visual strategies to help diminish problematic behaviors in Autism.  The TEACHH method advocates the use of the same kind of visual strategies and I feel if one were interested in implementing a TEACHH type program at home or at school this book would be a good one to purchase.
